A SPECIAL ISTIGHFAAR PRAYER-KHUTBAH
Audhu Billahi mina
shaytani-r-rajeem. Bismillahi Rahmanir Raheem-il-Hamdu lillahi Rabbil Aalameem.
Wa salla Allahu ala Sayyidina
wa Maulana Muhammad, wa ala Aali-hi was Sahbi-Hi wa sallim, aamin.
Astaghfiru
Llaha-l-Adheema-l-Ladhi la ilaha illa Huwa-l-Ayyal Qayyum, aamin.
It is an age-long knowledge
that when the land of Allah becomes corrupted, it majorly arises from the sins
and transgressions of its people.
It is also an age-long
knowledge that when sins become of unimaginable proportions, the only
palliative and a means out of the ensuing fitnah or turbulence is intensive,
sincere tawba or turning away from sins and repenting to Allah Tabaarak wa
Ta'ala.
The door of seeking
forgiveness opens to the servants and what is left is sincerity of supplicating
Allah via the route of al-istighfaar. There are many prayer-formulae and means
of seeking redress from sins practiced by the Righteous Folks and handed down
from generations of believers to their progeny of believers. One of such is
this one to be presented here as gift from THE QUEEN OF SHEBA PEACE FOUNDATION,
to all and sundry who are desirous of finding a way of sincere repentance to
Allah SWT.
This is thus the subject of
this introduction. Following is a brief with respect to a special khutbah on al
ISTIGHFAAR.
**About this Khutbah On
Istighfaar**
Audhu billahi mina Shaytani
Rajeem
Bismillahi Rahmanir Raheem
Wa solla Allahu ala Sayyidina
Muhammadin SAW wa ala alihi wa sahbihi wasalam, amin.
The narrative as handed down
orally and hereby documented for the sake of posterity concerning this special
Istighfaar, as obtained from the man of Allah who gave our source, the late
brother in Allah. As Sayyid Abdullateef Owolabi (may Allah Ts'ala be pleased
with him) is that, during the time of the Holy Prophet Muhammad SAW, there was
reported the death of a man.
The Prophet SAW informed his
companions that he had a place to go and many of his companions followed him as
was the fashion whenever the Noble Prophet had an outing.
When they got there, they met
the corpse of a dead man in his home. The Prophet SAW instructed immediate
burial preparations for the dead. What was surprising to the companions was
that the man was neither rich nor influential. He was not popular and was not
part of the Sahabas. He never was seen in the company of the companions. To all
of them he was totally unknown.
The Companions noticed the
earnestness of the Holy Prophet and the state of careful preparations which he
co-ordinated until the corpse was ready for the prayer of janazah which he, SAW
led.
Thereafter the congregation
carried the Bier and followed the Holy Prophet to his tomb, his final place of
rest. However, as they were trekking behind the Holy Prophet, they noticed the
way the Holy Prophet was walking on the ground as if his two legs were giving
him difficulties at placing them properly on the ground. Is it a case of some
thorns or impediments under the sole of the Holy Prophet's Blessed feet?
At long last, they arrived at
the burial ground, did the final prayers and ceremony and then left.
By now, the companions were
full of inquisitive observations. Who could this man be to be accorded great
respects as shown in the Holy Prophet's countenance throughout the burial rites?
And why was he unknown?. Was
he among those who submitted to Islam?
These were the thoughts on the
mind of the companions. They waited until they returned to their base and were
eager to ask the Holy Prophet about the dead unknown man buried by the Holy
Prophet with his blessed hands. So Allah permitted one of the Sahabas to dream
about the matter.
In his dream he asked the Holy
Prophet SAW concerning the dead man he and other companions went along with them
to bury him. He wanted to know who the man really was, and why he was not known
and also why was his burial handled with great care?
The Holy Prophet told him in
the dream that when he wakes up in the day, he should go and visit the dead man's
house where he would find his wife, and he should ask the wife what good,
righteous, noble deed he was used to doing regularly.
So when morning came, he
informed the Holy Prophet about his dream. So the Holy Prophet asked him to go
in search of the wife of the deceased and ask her questions concerning what she
knows about her husband 's way of life.
These questions became more
pressing when even the people in his neighbourhood, during his burial were
amazed, and whispered among themselves that the man was not known to be a
follower of the Holy Prophet in their neighbourhood and he was not active in
the social life and that hardly could people describe much about him, except
that he occasionally sent and returned greetings when passing by.
Hence they were equally
surprised at seeing the large entourage that attended his last burial rites
especially the presence of the New Arabian Prophet SAW.
So he went on his way and
eventually got to the man's home, met the wife and told him of his mission as
one of the companions of the Holy Prophet who was with the congregation the
previous day.
The wife, after expression of
gratitude and rendition of messages of greetings and appreciation to the Noble
Prophet, explained that his husband was a quiet man who loved the Prophet and
acknowledged his Mission as a sent Messenger of Allah despite his not being in
the Noble Prophet's presence because of their location being outside the
locality of the Prophet.
She went on to further confirm
that apart from the compulsory five times daily salah, he was not known for any
special superogatory devotions or tahajjud or the likes. He was not rich to
engage in much charity except the little that he could afford occasionally.
However, she said that she
often heard her husband referring to the saying of the Holy Prophet that the
best of works are those that are done consistently or regularly even if small.
She went on that, the husband
was ALWAYS doing a particular dua AFTER ASR on some sheet of paper.
So she went inside and showed
the paper to the companion with permission to take the paper to the Holy
Prophet and return same by his next return to her. She agreed.
The paper contained a dua of
Istighfar (Astaghfiru Llaha) recited 3000 after every salatul Asr with the
khutbah recited once thereafter.
The Holy Prophet was briefed
of the journey and his findings, and he handed the parchment of the dua to the
Holy Prophet.
The Holy Prophet then summoned
his companions and narrated the exalted maqam of the departed man. He said he
had taken the matter of Istighfaar as priority and has made himself accustomed
to reciting the dua daily to a point that Allah SWT had cleansed him to become
spiritually spotless such that, when he passed away, He, the Holy Prophet SAW
was inspired by Allah Ta'ala to go and perform the final burial rites on the
man.
The Holy Prophet continued,
that on the day of the burial the pathway from the abode of the deceased was
visited by Angels of The Beneficent God and they lined up on the way from his
house to the burial ground such that the entire land space was filled with the wings
of the Malaika or Angels so much that there was virtually no free space and he
was afraid to match the wings of the Angels as he was leading his companions to
carry the bier out to the burial spot.
The Holy Prophet then
emphasized the importance of seeking forgiveness of Allah and that it is a
wiper of sins, a quencher of Allah's Wrath, an Opener of good fortunes and a
closing agent for calamities, tribulations and ill fortunes.
O Allah!! We seek Forgiveness
from Thee, do pardon us and have Mercy upon us, for You are The Oft-Forgivibg,
Merciful..
CONCLUSION
We have come to the end of the
special khutbah. We encourage constant recital and a greater resolution to move
away from sinful acts so that we can benefit immensely from the dua in this
present life and in the Hereafter.
